The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation is now accepting applications for 2026 funding (up to $15,000 per Fellow). If you’re a mid-career professional in historic preservation and its allied fields, submit your research project before the deadline of December 15, 2025.
What are “allied fields?”
Landscape architecture, urban design, environmental planning, materials conservation, decorative arts, land use law, architectural design and history — all these, and certainly others — are fields with relevance to and overlap with historic preservation.
What kinds of projects does Fitch fund?
Review the work of our past-awarded Fellows and you’ll see that the projects to which the Fitch Foundation awards funding cover a broad range of subjects. Each contributes to the larger field of historic preservation by undertaking original research and adding to the font from which other professionals might seek information; testing and documenting new methods, whether they be in the conservation lab, organizing in the community, or other relevant venues; or investigating and arriving at new conclusions that move the field forward.

FITCH MID-CAREER FELLOWSHIP: Research grants of up to $15,000 will be awarded to one ore more mid-career professionals who have an academic background, professional experience and an established identity in one or more of the following fields: historic preservation, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, environmental planning, architectural history and the decorative arts. The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation will consider proposals for the research and/or the execution of the preservation-related projects in any of these fields. ROBERT SILMAN AWARD: One award up to $15,000 may be awarded to an engineer, architect or other design professional in a related field for a proposal exploring the preservation, restoration, or adaptive reuse of the built environment, in the spirit of Robert Silman (1935-2018). The proposal must advance the art and practice of preservation in the United States. View eligibility details and more.
